No. 3 Men's Lacrosse beats No. 4 RPI, 13-10 in Liberty League opener
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT junior Chase Bruno scored a career-high four goals to lead the No. 3 Tigers to a 13-10 win over No. 4 RPI in Saturday's Liberty League opener.
Senior Nate Senez scored three goals and sophomore Erich Action finished with a goal and a career-best two assists. Graduate student Ian Dinga had a goal and two assists while senior Michael Finneran and senior Ethan Harkins each tallied a goal and an assist.
Junior goalie Alex Zborowski made 15 saves and sophomore Logan Fletcher caused three turnovers. Fifth year Drew Leahy led the Tigers with five ground balls.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Bruno scored the first four goals of the game, giving RIT a 4-0 lead on his goal with 4:33 remaining in the quarter.
- RPI scored the next three goals, cutting the Tiger's lead to 4-3 on Erik Ojert's goal with 10:21 remaining in the second quarter.
- Harkins and Acton tallied back-to-back goals, taking a 6-3 lead on Acton's goal with 1:37 to play in the half.
- Zborowski made 11 first half saves, including eight in the first quarter.
- The Engineers scored the first two goals of the third quarter, cutting the Tiger's lead to 6-5 on Cooper Manzi's goal with 12:13 to play in the quarter.
- RIT ran off five straight goals, extending its lead to 11-5 on Finneran's goal with 3:22 to play in the frame. Senez, Dinga, Finneran, first year Ryan Bullock and graduate student Allyn French each scored in the Tiger's run.
- RPI scored five straight goals, cutting the Tiger's lead to 11-10 on Evan Whatley's goal with 8:14 to play in regulation.
- Senez scored off an assist from Acton with 6:40 to play to give RIT a 12-10 lead and Senez scored a man-up goal with 5:18 to play to make it a 13-10 final.
GAME NOTES:
- RPI outshot RIT, 43-39.
- The Tigers were 29-of-30 on clearing attempts and went 1-for-6 with the extra attacker
- RIT won seven face offs and had 28 ground balls
