Women's Basketball holds off Union, 66-63

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – First year guard Caitlyn Henderson scored a game-high 21 points to help RIT pick up a 66-63 win against Union, Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Tigers used a 12-3 run spanning more than five minutes to start the second quarter to make it a 24-17 advantage after entering the quarter trailing by two points. The run was capped off by a three-pointer from first year forward Ben Kayser-Cochran.
  • In the third quarter, the teams traded the lead several times. The largest lead of the third came when Union's Grace Caseretti drained a three-point shot with 1:49 remaining.
  • RIT tied the game at 46-46 to start the fourth quarter as neither team managed to pull away.
  • With 15 seconds on the clock, Henderson hit a long range shot from beyond the arc to solidify the RIT lead, 64-61, before sophomore guard Maddy Ramsgard sealed the win by hitting a pair of free-throws with three seconds left.

 
GAME NOTES

  • Henderson shot 9 of 15 from the field, including 3 of 5 from three-point range. The newcomer also had eight rebounds which matches a season high. The guard is averaging 14.6 points through eight games.  
  • Free-throw shooting proved to be the difference for RIT as the team finished 11 of 15 at the charity stripe while Union made 3 of 9 from the line.
  • Sophomore forward Faye Kaplinski chipped in nine points, eight rebounds and three assists as Kayser-Chochran scored 11 points.
  • The win puts RIT's record at 4-4 overall and 2-0 in the Liberty League.

 
WHAT'S NEXT
The Tigers are off until resuming the season on Jan. 7 when they visit Rochester for their final non-conference game of the season. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
