Softball defeats Cobleskill 18-0 (5 inn.), falls to Westfield State, 11-6

NAPLES, Fla. - The RIT Softball team split two games on Saturday in Florida during day-two action at the Gene Cusic Classic. The Tigers defeated Cobleskill, 18-0 (5 inn.) before coming up short of Westfield State, 11-6.

RIT 18, COBLESKILL 0 (5 inn.)

  • Kathryn Baretela went 2-for-3, including a grand slam during a 12-run third inning that broke open the game.
  • Maddy Cook finished 3-for-3 with two doubles and four RBI, while Carlianna Ewing ended the game 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI.
  • Anna Cavotta was 3-for-4 at the plate, including a double, while scoring four runs. 
  • Emma Merkley finished 2-for-3 with a triple, three runs scored and a RBI.
  • Kate Carlone ended the game 2-for-3 with a triple, a run scored and two RBI.
  • Jessica Majot only allowed two hits while striking out five in three innings of work while Addison Hill allowed one hit and a walk in two innings of relief.

WESTFIELD STATE 11, RIT 6

  • RIT scored five runs in the top of the first. Cavotta and Merkley led off the game with back-to-back singles before Bailey Kehl plated Cavotta with a double and Merkely came home on an error by the Owl shortstop off the bat of Carlone. Erin Ozminkowski knocked Kehl home with a double before Carlone came home after Ozminkowski was forced at third off a ball hit by Baretela. Baretela eventually came home from third on a two-out single by Carlianna Ewing
  • Westfield State scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the first to pull within two, before scoring four runs (two earned) on three hits and two errors in the bottom of the third. 
  • Ewing led off the fourth with a triple and made it a 7-6 game after scoring on a Cavotta ground-out, but the Owls plated two more runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 9-6 lead. 
  • The Owls tacked on single runs in the bottom of the fifth and the sixth wile holding the Tigers scoreless to complete the comeback win. 
  • Mackenzie Blair took the loss, allowing nine runs (seven earned) while striking out five in 4.2 total innings of work. Hill also logged 1.1 innings, surrendering two runs (one earned) and three hits while striking out two.

RIT continued Gene Cusic Classic play on Sunday (Mar. 9), taking on LaRoche at 11:00 a.m. and Rockford at 1:00 p.m. at the Lee Health Sports Complex in Fort Myers.
