No. 2 Men's Lacrosse wins 12-9 at No. 5 St. Lawrence
CANTON, N.Y. – RIT junior attack Clifford Gaston tallied three goals and sophomore goalie Alex Zborowski made 17 saves to lead the No. 2 Tigers to a 12-9 win at No. 5 St. Lawrence, Saturday.
Senior midfielder Kaden Brunson tied his career-high tallying three goals, while senior midfielder Dylan Bruno scored two goals. Gaston finished with five points and senior midfielder Seth Grottenthaler tallied a goal and two assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Grottenthaler and Bruno each scored in the first quarter to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead after the first 15 minutes.
- Graduate student midfielder John Mozrall scored off an assist from graduate student attack Jake Erickson 43 seconds into the second quarter to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
- Bruno scored his second goal of the half with 13:28 to play to give RIT a 4-0 lead.
- St. Lawrence tallied two straight goals, cutting the Tiger's lead to 4-2 on David Herlihy's goal with 10:39 remaining.
- RIT ran off two straight goals, taking a 6-2 lead on Brunson's goal with 5:24 to play.
- Ben Hutchinson scored with 2:12 remaining to the Tiger's lead to 6-3 at halftime.
- Gaston scored a man-up goal early in the third quarter to give the Tigers a 7-3 lead and graduate student face-off specialist Allyn French won the ensuing face-off and scored to increase RIT's lead to 8-3.
- Judge Murphy scored for St. Larence to cut the Tiger's lead to 8-4, but back-to-back goals from Brunson and junior attack Ethan Harkins increased the RIT lead to 10-4.
- The Saints scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter, cutting RIT's lead to 10-7 on Daniel Maloney's goal with 7:53 to play.
- Brunson scored his third goal of the game with 5:49 remaining and Gaston scored with 4:42 to play to give the Tigers a 12-7 lead.
- Mahoney scored two straight goals for St. Lawrence, including one with 1:44 remaining to make it a 12-9 final.
GAME NOTES:
- St. Lawrence outshot RIT, 52-43.
- French won 14-of-24 face offs and had five ground balls.
- RIT went 25-of-27 on clearing attempts and 3-for-5 on man-up.
- RIT improved to 5-1 in the Liberty League and moved into a tie for second place with St. Lawrence.
