Gilbert and Koen named RIT Athletes of the Week

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Graduate student Amelia Gilbert (WXC) and sophomore Derick Koen (MXC) were named RIT Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.

Gilbert finished 16th out of 145 runners at the NCAA Niagara Regionals on Saturday, helping RIT place third out of 20 teams. Gilbert was the second Liberty League runner to cross the finish line and based on her performance, was invited to participate in the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships this coming weekend.

Koen finished 11th out of 176 runners at NCAA Niagara Regionals on Saturday, leading RIT to a sixth place finish out of 25 teams. Koen was the first Liberty League runner to cross the finish line. Based on his performance, Koen received an at-large invite to the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championships.

Nov. 7 Emma Roland (WHKY) Mike Atanasoff (MSD)

Atanasoff won two individual events and swam legs in two winning relays to help RIT to a 176-124 win over Gannon, Saturday. The senior swimmer won the 50 freestyle in a pool-record time of 20.73 and 100 butterfly with a pool-record time of 49.05. Atanasoff swam the third leg in the winning 200 medley relay and the anchor leg in the 200 freestyle relay.

Roland scored two goals, including the game-winner in OT to lead RIT to a 3-2 win over Mercyhurst, Saturday. She tied the game at 1-1 on her goal at 11:39 of the first period, and tallied the game-winner :52 into overtime off an assist from senior Mia Tsilemos.

Oct. 31 Amber Flynn (WSOC) Drew Scheib (MSD)

Flynn played 180 minutes, anchoring a Tigers defense that allowed four shots on target and no goals in a pair of 0-0 draws at Ithaca and Vassar to help RIT secure a second-place finish in the final Liberty League standings.

Scheib won two individual events to lead RIT to wins over St. Lawrence and Monroe Community College, Friday. The senior swimmer won the 100 backstroke (52.43) and the 200 IM (1:59.05).

Oct. 24 Madisen Pavoris (WSD) Mike Atanasoff (MSD)

Pavoris won and individual event to help lead RIT to a 225-56 win at Alfred, Saturday. The first-year swimmer won the 200 backstroke in a pool-record time of 2:10.75.

Atanasoff won two individual events and was part of two winning relays to help lead No. 17 RIT to a 227-73 win at Alfred, Saturday. Atanasoff won the 50 freestyle (21.57) and 100 freestyle (48.36). He swam the anchor leg in the 200 medley relay that set a pool record (1:39.07) and was part of the winning 200 freestyle relay.

Oct. 17 Pickering (WHKY) Tommy Scarfone (MHKY)

Pickering tied the game with her first collegiate goal 36 seconds into the second period and also added an assist in Friday's win before blocking three shots on Saturday.

Scarfone made 36 saves in Saturday's 3-0 shutout of Notre Dame during RIT's annual Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend game in front of a sellout crowd of 10,556 at Blue Cross Arena. He backstopped the Tigers' defense that killed all six Irish power play attempts, including a full 5-on-3 six minutes into the game as well as a five-minute major at the end of the second period. Scarfone logged his sixth career shutout and 23rd career game with at least 30 saves en route to his fifth AHA weekly honor.
 
Oct. 10 Jessie Gomez (WSOC) Men's Varsity 8

Gomez recorded two goals and an assist to help lead RIT to a 1-0-1 record last week, firing six shots, including three on target. Gomez scored in the second minute in the Tigers' 1-1 tie at Nazareth, Tuesday. She scored a goal and added an assist in RIT's 2-0 win over St. Lawrence, Saturday. She scored in the 14th minute to give RIT the lead, and assisted on Olivia Harris' goal in the 19th minute to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

The men's Varsity 8+ boat comprised of coxswain, Jacob Marrer, Nic Langdon, Parker Kinsman, Sam Ferreira, Tommy Moore, Ben Baker, Jack Oden, Adrian Edwards and Adam Dernis finished first in the Men's Collegiate 1V 8+ race at the Head of the Genesee, Saturday. The Tigers took first with a time of 16:41.825, beating Clarkson, Union and Rochester.

Oct. 3 Junior Sydney Neff (WVB) and Derick Koen (MXC)

Neff pushed the Tigers to a 2-0 week, including a three-set sweep at Bard in their Liberty League opener. She totaled a three-set season-high 30 assists to go along with 11 digs and five services aces while directing the offense to a .299 attack percentage versus Bard before adding 27 assists and 10 digs in a 3-0 win over SUNY Poly.

Koen landed his second RIT Athlete of the Week accoldae after finishing first out of 376 runners (25:36.5) to lead the men's cross country team to fourth place out of 34 teams Saturday at the Paul Short Run in the Men's College White 8K.

Sept. 26 Elena Onodera (WSOC) Grahith Movva (MTEN)

Onodera tallied an assist in 168 minutes of action to help RIT to a 1-0-1 record, last week. The sophomore forward recorded an assist and had two shots in 78 minutes in Wednesday's 1-1 draw against No. 1 William Smith. She played 90 minutes, firing three shots and earned the corner kick that led to RIT's game-winning goal in Saturday's 1-0 win at No. 22 Clarkson.

Movva picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Daemen's Alex Lumanog at first singles in RIT's 5-4 win, Wednesday. Movva came back from a 2-4 first-set deficit to win 6-4, winning the second set, 6-2. Movva and first-year Anthony Lounder came back from a 3-5 deficit to beat Luis de Vuyst and Zachary LaPlante, 8-5 win at third doubles.
 
Sept. 18 Kira Kronenberg (WTEN) Derick Koen (MXC)
Kronenberg recorded a 2-1 record at the St. Lawrence Fall Invitational, last weekend. The first-year defeated St. Lawrence's Molly Jespersen, 8-2 in her opening match, Saturday. She lost her second match 8-7 (7-4) to Angelica Aksdal-Jansen, but came back to defeat Geneseo's Natalie Pipes, 8-0 on Sunday. She teamed up with first-year Maya Clinard to record a 2-1 record in doubles.

Koen was the top Division III runner at the Yellowjacket Invitational, Saturday. The sophomore runner finished 14th out of 250 runners, completing the eight-kilometer course in 25:54.7.

Sept. 11 Olivia Harris (WSOC) Joshua Price (MSOC)
Harris tallied a goal and an assist to help lead RIT to a 2-0 record, last week. The junior midfielder had an assist on Elena Onodera's goal in RIT's 1-0 win over Wheaton (Ill.), Friday. She scored the Tigers' first goal in the 21st minute in RIT's 2-0 win over Penn State-Behrend, Saturday. 

Price scored three goals on six shots to help lead RIT to a 2-0 record, last week. The senior forward tallied a career-high two goals in the Tigers 4-0 win over Keuka, Tuesday. He scored in the fifth minute to give the Tigers the lead and again in the tenth minute to make 2-0, Tigers. Price scored in the 80th minute in Friday's 3-1 win over Geneseo, intercepting a pass in the Knight's defense zone, and scoring in the corner.

Sept. 5 Katie Cobos (WXC) Randy Dickersbach (MSOC)
Cobos finished first out of 57 runners to lead RIT to first place at the Fifth-Annual St. John Fisher Terry Rodenbeck Invitational, Friday. Cobos finished the four-kilometer course in 14:53.1, outkicking a tight pack at the end to win by less than two seconds.

Dickersbach scored a goal in the Tigers' 1-1 draw at Brockport, Friday. The senior forward scored in the 52nd minute off a corner kick to give the Tigers the lead, finishing with two shots on target.
