No. 3 Men's Lacrosse holds on for a 12-10 win at No. 17 Cortland
CORTLAND, N.Y. – RIT senior Nate Senez recorded five points to lead the No. 3 Tigers to a 12-10 win on a snowy night at No. 17 Cortland, Wednesday.
Senez two goals and three assists. Senior Ethan Harkins scored four goals and senior Clifford Gaston finished with two goals and an assist. Junior Chase Bruno scored two goals and graduate student Ian Dinga and Seth Grottenthaler each tallied a goal and an assist.
Junior goalie Alex Zborowski made eight saves. Sophomore Logan Fletcher and fifth year Drew Leahy each caused two turnovers while Leahy led the Tigers with six ground balls. Graduate student Allyn French won 10-of-16 face offs and had four ground balls and fifth year Nick Farrell won 6-of-10 draws.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Gaston scored 50 seconds into the game to give RIT an early lead.
- Cortland tallied back-to-back goals taking a 2-1 lead on Klay Stuver's goal with 10:28 remaining in the quarter.
- Grottenthaler scored to tie the game at 2-2 followed by a Harkins goal with 7:38 to play give the Tigers a 3-2 lead.
- Sam Rothman scored with 5:48 remaining to tie the score at 3-3.
- Harkins and Dinga scored the final two goals of the quarter taking a 5-3 lead on Dinga's goal with 3:37 to play.
- Stuver scored early in the second quarter to cut RIT's lead to 5-4.
- RIT ran off four straight goals to lead 9-4 at halftime. Senez scored twice, including a tally with 7:56 remaining to give the Tigers a five-goal lead.
- Bruno scored his second goal of the game early in the third quarter to give RIT a 10-4 lead.
- Harkins' man-up goal with 11:56 to play gave the Tigers an 11-4 lead.
- Rothman and Nicky Mittenberger tallied back-to-back goals, cutting RIT's lead to 11-6 on Minttenberger's goal with 9:32 to play.
- Harkins scored his second goal of the quarter with 4:27 remaining to increase the Tiger's lead to 12-6.
- Cortland outscored RIT 4-0 in the fourth quarter. Caden Yancey scored early in the quarter to cut RIT's lead to 12-7.
- Frank Neeson scored to make it 12-8 followed by a goal from Ryan Scanlon with 8:41 to play to make it 12-9.
- Rothman scored with 4:08 remaining to make it a 12-10 final.
GAME NOTES:
- RIT outshot Cortland, 47-31
- The Tigers were 21-of-24 on clearing attempts and went 1-for-2 with the extra attacker
- RIT won 16-of-26 face offs and had 53 ground balls
