Women's Lacrosse downs RPI, 16-7

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT senior Lily DePalma recorded her 100th career point to lead the Tigers to a 16-7 win over RPI, Saturday.
 
DePalma finished with five goals while junior Zoe Heffernan tallied two goals and had three assists. Junior Morgan Nichter scored three goals and added an assist. Sophomore Sarah Halinan recorded a career high three point on two goals and an assist and junior Jenna Bovenzi finished with three assists. Junior Adele Jones had two goals and an assists and juniors Milena Stephen and Kate Trojan each scored a goal.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • DePalma, Jones and Heffernan each scored early in the first quarter to give RIT a 3-0 lead.
  • RPI's Lauren DeLeo broke the Tigers run with her goal to cut RIT's lead to 3-1.
  • Nichter scored to give RIT a 4-1 lead followed by a Lisa Boehmer goal to make it 4-2 with 6:59 remaining in the opening frame.
  • Nichter scored her second goal of the quarter to give RIT a 5-2 lead.
  • Kira Abdelsayed tallied back-to-back goals, cutting RIT's lead to 5-4 on her goal with 1:58 to play.
  • Hallinan scored with 1:02 remaining to give the Tigers a 6-4 lead.
  • Trojan scored 52 seconds into the second quarter to increase RIT's lead to 7-4.
  • Abdelsayed tallied her third goal of the first half to make it a two-goal deficit for RPI.
  • Stephen scored a woman-up goal off an assist from Heffernan to give RIT an 8-5 lead and RPI's Ella Graff scored to cut RIT's lead to 8-6.
  • Heffernan and DePalma scored back-to-back goals inside the final minute of the quarter to give the Tigers a 10-6 halftime lead.
  • RIT outscored the Engineers 4-0 in the third quarter to lead 14-6. DePalma scored twice in the quarter while Heffernan and Hallinan each scored. Junior Ellie Ruddy made three saves in the third, while the Tigers defense forced RPI into six turnovers in the frame.
  • Ava Gilardone broke RPI's 22-minute scoreless streak with her goal with 12:19 to play in the fourth quarter.
  • DePalma scored followed by a Jones goal with 2:13 remaining to make it a 16-7 final.

 
 
GAME NOTES

  • RIT outshot Rensselaer, 35-27
  • Ruddy finished with six saves to earn the win in net
  • Sophomore Katherine Killian had eight draw controls, three caused turnovers and five ground balls
  • DePalma is the 19th player in program history to score 100 career points
  • RIT was 17-of-18 on clearing attempts and won 15-of-26 draw controls
