Men's Lacrosse beats St. Lawrence 11-10 to win its 12th Liberty League Championship
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT graduate student Seth Grottenthaler scored three goals to lead the top-seeded Tigers to an 11-10 win against No. 2 St. Lawrence in the Liberty League Championship, Sunday. Grottenthaler was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
RIT wins its 12th Liberty League Tournament title.
First year Ryan Bullock scored a career-high four goals and junior Chase Bruno finished with a goal and two assists. Graduate student Ian Dinga scored two goals and sophomore Erich Acton scored a goal.
Bullock caused two turnovers, and graduate student Allyn French won 15-of-23 face offs and had five ground balls. Junior Alex Zborowski made eight saves in goal to improve to 18-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Ted Wilson scored with 9:57 to play in the first quarter to give the St. Lawrence the lead.
- Bruno tied the game at 1-1 and Grottenthaler gave RIT a 2-1 lead on his goal with 4:11 remaining in the opening frame.
- Bobby Wells and Henry Crean tallied back-to-back goals late in the first to give the Saints a 3-2 lead.
- Grottenthaler tied the score at 3-3 on his goal with 55 seconds to play in the first.
- Grottenthaler scored the lone goal of the second quarter, giving RIT a 4-3 lead on his third goal of the first half with 13:08 remaining in the second.
- RIT scored the first four goals of the third quarter, opening up an 8-3 lead on Acton's goal with 9:18 to play in the third.
- Crean scored to make it 8-4 and Padraic Condon won the ensuing face-off and scored to cut RIT's lead to 8-6.
- Wilson scored early in the fourth quarter and Jamie Rosenzweig tallied a man-up goal with 11:35 to play to cut RIT's lead to 8-7.
- Bullock scored back-to-back goals, giving the Tigers a 10-7 lead on his goal with 7:32 to play.
- Dan Anderson scored followed by a goal from Wells with 4:28 to play to cut the Tigers lead to 10-9.
- Bullock scored his fourth goal of the game with 3:47 to play to give RIT an 11-9 lead.
- Wells tallied a man-up goal with 2:09 remaining to make it an 11-10 final.
GAME NOTES:
- RIT outshot St. Lawrence, 46-29
- The Tigers were 20-of-21 on clearing attempts.
- RIT went 16-of-29 on face offs and had 37 ground balls
- RIT claims its 12th Liberty League Tournament title in the last 13 seasons
- Senior Clifford Gaston had an assist and became the second player (Ryan Lee) in program history to reach 300 career points.
