Men’s Cross Country places second at Tom Balon Alumni Classic

BROCKPORT, N.Y.  – The RIT men's cross country team opened the season by taking second place at Brockport's Tom Balon Alumni Classic at Sweden Town Park, Saturday.

The Tigers were the top collegiate team at the 5k race, finishing three points behind the Brockport Alumni team.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • RIT placed three runners in the top 10, including senior Derick Koen, who crossed the finish line second overall, with a 5k time of 15:37.8. Koen officially won the race as unattached runner Jared Smith posted a time of 15:32.1.
  • Jackson Burger, a junior, placed seventh overall with a 15:49.0 clocking, as first-year Luca Strangis was right behind in eighth with a time of 15.54.0.
  • Sophomore Matthew Califf and junior Sebastian Montalvo rounded out the scorers for the Tigers, placing 13th and 15th, respectively.
  • RIT finished with 40 points as the top collegiate team in the race as Brockport Alumni led with 37 points. Rochester finished in third place with 64 points, while Ithaca took fourth place with a total of 97 points.  

WHAT'S NEXT
RIT will prepare for Rochester's Yellowjacket Invitational, which will take place Saturday, September 20, at Genesee Valley Park.
