Men's Hockey opens season with 3-2 OT loss at St. Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. – RIT graduate student defenseman Dimitri Mikrogiannakis tallied two goals, including the game-tying goal late in the third period, but it was host St. Lawrence pulling out a 3-2 overtime victory versus the visiting Tigers in both teams' season-opener, Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • St. Lawrence scored 11 seconds into the game after Will Arquiett collected a long rebound at the top of the right faceoff circle and scored on a slap shot, far post.
  • The Saints took a 2-0 lead with 5:26 left in the period after Spencer Bell took a drop pass from Nicholas Beneteau in the left faceoff circle and scored on a wrist shot, far post.
  • RIT got on the board with 15:33 left in the second. Graduate student forwad Nick Cafarelli dug a puck off the left boards and centered a pass to sophomore defenseman Crossley Stewart in the neutral zone. Stewart skated the puck to the top of the right faceoff circle and dropped a pass to a trailing Mikrogiannakis, who scored on a wrist shot under Saints' goaltender Mason Kucenski's glove.
  • Mikrogiannakis tied the score with 1:57 left in regulation. A St. Lawrence player tried to send a clear around the end boards, but junior forward Simon Isabelle knocked the puck down and found Mikrogiannakis open in the right faceoff circle, who whipped a wrist shot under the crossbar for the equalizer.
  • St. Lawrence scored the game-winner with 2:21 left in overtime after beating the Tigers back for an odd-man rush. Mason Waite slipped a pass to Greg Lapointe in the right facoff circle, who scored on a wrist shot that deflected off the far post and in off the back of RIT junior goaltender Trent Burnham's pads.

  • RIT killed five St. Lawrence power plays, but finished 0-for-2 with the extra man.

  • Mikrogiannakis logged his first career multi-goal game in his 123rd career appearance in a Tiger sweater.
