Six Things You Need to Know about the 2023-24 Wrestling team

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - RIT opens the 2023-24 regular season on Saturday (Nov. 4) at the Ned McGinley Invitational hosted by King's College. Here are six things you need to know about the Tigers:

About Last Season…
The 2022-23 Tigers finished with a 9-3 record in dual matches, and took home team titles at the RIT Invitational and the Wil Abele Invitational. RIT finished a program-best third at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships and 25th at the NCAA Division III Championships.

Senior Colby Giroux and sophomore Josh Harkless earned All American Honors at the NCAA Division III Championships.
 
Senior Austin Lamb earned the Tony Wallace Award after winning the 165-lb. division at the RIT Invitational and was second at the NCAA Mideast Regional earning a bid to compete at the NCAA's.
 
Sophomore Nate DeGroff finished second at 285 at the NCAA Mideast Regional earning a trip to the NCAA Championships.

Fast forward to this season; Lamb has graduated, Giroux is doing rotations as part of his PA program requirements, and DeGroff and Harkless are on co-op. That said, Tigers return several high achievers for Bovenzi's eighth season.

Leaders of the Pack
Senior Ben Dougherty and juniors Mike Glynn III, Matthew Grant and Josh Post were named co-captains for 2023-24

Dougherty recorded a 23-10 record last season, finishing second at 174-lb. at the RIT Invitational and fifth at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships.

Glynn was 23-15 last season with a fourth place finish at the Ned McGinley Invitational and sixth at the RIT Invitational.

Grant had 14 wins last season and place second at 149-lb at the New York State Intercollegiate Open, while Post posted a 21-9 record.

Back for More
Sophomore Gabe Scalise was 33-11 last season with a third-place finish at the Mideast/South futures and a fifth at the Empire Conference Championships. Junior Logan Patterson returns after an injury cut his 2022-23 season short. Sophomore Nick Smith finished second at 197-lb at the RIT Invitational and recorded a 6-4 record. Junior Liam Strouse went 20-15 last season with a third-place finish at the Mideast/South Futures. Sophomore Zach Swyers finished last season with 13 wins, while sophomore Elon Martin recorded nine wins.

Shiny New Conference
RIT will join the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) as associate members along with Ithaca, St. John Fisher and Utica beginning this season. The four new members join Brockport, Cortland, Oneonta and Oswego to make up the eight-team conference.

Tiger Cubs
There are 12 first-year wrestlers on the Tigers roster this season, hailing from six states and in eight classes weight classes. The first years are comprised of Justin Baker, Gurjaan Bhangu, Mac Davidson, Jacob Deysher, Michael Drazek, Ryan Fischer, Josh Lanka, Jared Lee, Carter Tadusz, Connor Timmons, Bryson Vaughn and Josh Warland will al vie for time in the lineup.

Schedule
The Tigers begin their regular season on Saturday (Nov. 4) at the Ned McGinley Invitational, followed by a trip to Cleveland on November 13, for the Ohio Intercollegiate Open. The tigers will host the Empire Conference Championships on November 18, and the 57th annual RIT Invitational on December 2.

The Tigers start 2024 with a bang when they compete at the NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Jan. 5-6. It is a highlight of the schedule for Bovenzi, as it allows the team to test itself against top teams from around the country.

Later in the month, RIT competes at the Will Abele Invitational hosted by Ursinus and the New York State Intercollegiate Open in Garden City on January 13. The Tigers face Oswego in a dual meet (Jan. 25) before competing at the Elizabethtown Tournament (Jan. 27).

The Tigers host the Tiger Duals on Feb. 10 and will honor the senior class prior to the Brockport match on Feb. 16. RIT wraps up the regular season at the Mideast/South Futures in Ewing, N.J. (Feb. 25).

The postseason begins with the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship hosted by RIT on March 1-2, with qualifiers then advancing to the NCAA Championships in La Crosse, WI, on March 15-16.
