Cassaro, Wilde land weekly Atlantic Hockey honors

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - RIT fifth-year Gianfranco Cassaro was named the Atlantic Hockey Defensive Player of the Week while first-year forward Matthew Wilde landed Rookie of the Week honors, Monday.

Cassaro landed his fifth weekly award of the season after breaking the Atlantic Hockey single season goal scoring record by a defenseman with his 17th tally of the season in Friday's 4-1 victory over Niagara. The nation's top goal scoring defenseman then added an assist to Friday's 5-2 victory to extend a six-game point streak.

Wilde opened the scoring with his 17th goal of the season in Friday's victory before adding an assist to Saturday's series-clincher. Garnering his first weekly league award of the season, he is the first D1-era Tiger first-year player to score 17 goals in a season.

Top-seeded RIT will host fifth-seeded AIC in the Atlantic Hockey Championship game this Saturday (Marc 23) at 7:05 p.m. with the winner advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
