Women's Soccer falls to William Smith, 1-0, in Liberty League Championship

GENEVA, N.Y. - The RIT women's soccer team lost to William Smith, 1-0 in the Liberty League Championship, Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the third minute, William Smith had a scoring opportunity inside the box, but sophomore goalkeeper Emily Sanchez was able to come up with a fantastic save
  • Junior defender Rachel Marriott took a corner kick for the Tigers in the ninth minute that was well-served into the box for senior midfielder Abby Umbenhaur who sent the ball inches outside the right post
  • In the 12th minute, sophomore forward Elena Onodera and senior midfielder Jessie Gomez had back-to-back shot opportunities that were both blocked by William Smith defenders
  • Onodera had a breakaway opportunity in the 25th minute, taking a shot outside of the box that was saved by the William Smith goalkeeper
  • William Smith's Julia Berg scored the winning goal in the 35th minute
  • Hoping to equalize the game, senior forward Teresa Avino fired a shot inside the box that was saved at the last second by the William Smith goalkeeper

GAME NOTES

  • This was the Tigers' first Liberty League loss of the season
  • William Smith out-shot RIT 14-8
  • Sanchez had six saves in goal 
  • Umbenhaur, Sanchez, sophomore midfielder Jillian Antol, sophomore defender Neena Damodaran and junior defender Amber Flynn played all 90 minutes
