Women's Soccer defeats Babson, 1-0, in NCAA Tournament opener

BABSON PARK, M.A. – RIT junior defender Rachel Marriott scored the game winning goal in the Tigers', 1-0 win over Babson, Saturday, advancing RIT to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first shot on goal came from senior midfielder Jessie Gomez in the 24th minute, taking a shot inside the box that was saved by the Babson goalkeeper
  • In the 29th minute, first-year midfielder Emma Pedro took a corner kick for the Tigers, serving a ball to junior defender Amber Flynn who had a header that was saved
  • Pedro had a shot opportunity in the 42nd minute that was wide outside the left post
  • In the 51st minute, Babson almost took the lead with a header that went off of the crossbar
  • Gomez took a free kick for the Tigers in the 55th minute and sent the ball towards goal, where the Babson goalkeeper deflected Gomez's shot. Off of the deflection, senior midfielder Abby Umbenhaur had a shot that was punched away by the keeper, towards an open Marriott who fired a shot into the back of the net

 
GAME NOTES

  • RIT out-shot Babson 13-11, with four being on-target
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Sanchez only faced two shots on goal
  • RIT advances to the second round for the fourth time in program history, facing Amherst who the Tigers' fell to in last year's tournament

RIT will face Amherst in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Sunday (Nov. 12) with kickoff scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
