Women's Basketball opens season with 83-68 setback to visiting Geneseo
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT first-year guard Caroline Henderson scored a team-high 18 points, while first-year forward Ben Kayser-Cochran added 17 points and seven rebounds, but it was visiting Geneseo earning a 83-68 victory, Friday, both team's season-opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- RIT hit its first five shots of the game, including four-straight three-pointers, to jump out to a 14-0 lead. Geneseo answered with a 7-0 run, but Henderson knocked down her third three-pointer to push the Tigers to a 17-7 lead with 5:38 on the first-quarter clock.
- RIT built its largest lead, 19-7, on a jumper by senior guard Kaitlyn Bockelman and led 21-9 on a jumper by sophomore guard Maddy Ramsgard with 3:34 on the clock, but the Knights finished the quarter with nine-unanswered points to pull within three, 21-18.
- Geneseo continued the run with the first six points of the second to take a 24-21 lead, but Henderson connected on back-to-back three-pointers to push the Tigers back on top, 27-24, with 6:37 left in the half.
- RIT later took a five point lead, 31-26, on a Ramsgard jumper with 2:53 on the clock, but the Knights finished the second with an 8-2 surge to carry a 34-33 lead into halftime.
- Alternating baskets to start the second half, RIT led 42-40 before Geneseo scored seven-straight points for a 47-42 edge.
- A jumper by senior guard Hannah Durand pulled the Tigers with in three, 47-44, with 3:22 on the clock, but the Knights finished the quarter with an 11-3 run to push their lead back to 11, 58-47.
- RIT got as close as eight, 61-53, with 8:09 remaining in the game, but Geneseo responded with eight-straight points to build their largest lead of the game, 69-53, with 6:11 to play.
- A Bockelman three pulled the Tigers within 10, 73-63, with 1:56 left in the game, but the Knights finished with a 10-5 run to put the game out of reach.
GAME NOTES
- RIT knocked down 13-of-34 three-point attempts, including 6-of-11 by Henderson in her first collegiate game, while Geneseo finished the night 13-of-28 from long range.
- Bockelman totaled 11 points and a team-high five assists.
- Six of Kayser-Cochran's seven rebounds were on the defensive glass.
- Ramsgard ended the game with eight points and seven rebounds.
WHAT'S NEXT
RIT hits the road for a two games at the St. Mary's (Md.) Jamie L. Roberts Memorial Tournament next weekend, taking on the host Seahawks on Friday (Nov. 15) at 7:00 p.m. before facing Catholic on Saturday (Nov. 16) at 1:00 p.m.
