Women's Volleyball defeats Geneseo, 3-2, falls to Carnegie Mellon, 3-1

GENESEO, N.Y. – The RIT women's volleyball team split two matches on Saturday, earning a 3-2 (22-25, 25-17, 21-25, 25-18, 15-10) 
 
RIT 3, Geneseo 2 (22-25, 25-17, 21-25, 25-18, 15-10)

  • Tied, 2-2, in the opening set, Geneseo used a 13-5 surge to build a 15-7 lead. RIT got as close as five, 16-11, but the Knights responded to build their largest lead, 22-12, en route to the opening win.
  • Geneso led, 11-9, in the second, but the Tigers bounced back with a 14-5 run to build a 23-14 it would not relinquish to even the match.
  • RIT led, 9-6, to start the third, but a 14-5 Geneseo run put the Tigers behind, 20-11. RIT battled back within two following a 9-0 run, but the Knights scored five of the final eight points to take a 2-1 lead.
  • The Tigers rode a 7-0 run to a 9-2 fourth-set lead, before Geneseo came back within three, 12-9. Later leading, 18-15, RIT finished the set on a 7-3 run to force a deciding fifth set.
  • Leading, 6-5, in the fifth, RIT put together an 8-2 run for a 13-6 lead. Geneseo scored three straight before the Tigers finished the comeback win.
  • First-year Macie Jolliffe ended the match with 16 kills and 10 digs.
  • Senior Hailey Blixt led the Tigers with 21 digs and added four service aces. 
  • Senior Sydney Neff totaled 49 assists, 10 digs, four service aces and seven kills. 

Carnegie Mellon 3, RIT 1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-11, 25-15)

  • Tied, 2-2, in the first, Carnegie Mellon rode a 12-3 run to a 14-5 lead. Trailing, 17-6, the Tigers scored five-straight points to cut the CMU lead to six, 17-11, but the Tartans closed the set with an 8-4 run for a 1-0 lead.
  • Trailing, 13-12, in the second, RIT scored five consecutive points to kick off a 10-5 run for a 22-18 lead. CMU scored two straight points to pull within two, 22-20, but the RIT scored three of the final five to even the match, 1-1.
  • The Tartans used an 11-1 run to build an early 12-3 lead in the third, and later score four-straight to build a 20-8 lead that proved decisive.
  • CMU opened an early 8-5, fourth-set lead, and later used a 5-1 run to open a 19-13 edge. The Tigers closed within four, 19-5, but the Tartans scored the final six points to close the victory. 
  • Junior Samantha Cox led RIT with 12 kills
  • Neff compiled 31 assists and 17 digs.
  • Blixt added 10 digs and five service aces. 

WHAT'S NEXT
RIT heads to Clarkson for a Liberty League Tournament Quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday (Nov. 7). The sixth-seeded Tigers and the third-seeded Golden Knights will square off at 5:00 p.m.
