Men's Cross Country finishes sixth at Niagara Regionals

HOUGHTON, N.Y. - RIT sophomore Derick Koen finished 11th out of 176 runners to lead the men's cross country team to sixth place out of 25 teams at the NCAA Division III Niagara Region Championships, Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Koen finished the eight-kilometer course with a time of 24:47.4, while junior Matt Chaikowsky placed 32nd with a time of 25:35.2
  • Sophomore Evan Owens finished 34th (25:37.7) followed by sophomore Joe Krenzer in 47th (25:55.3) and first-year Turner Gill in 49th (25:57.7)
  • Senior Zachary Eckhardt placed 69th with a time of 26:19.9 and senior Nathan Ballay finished 73rd with a time of 26:37.5
  • Geneseo took the team title with 41 points, followed by NYU (57), Brockport (87), Cortland (160) and Rochester (162) in the top-five. RIT finished with 171 points.
  • Koen, Chaikowsky and Owens earned All-Region honors for finishing in the top-35. 

WHAT'S NEXT
The full NCAA Division III Championships field, including team and individual at-large bids, will be announced on Sunday (Nov. 12). The championship race will be at Big Spring High School in Newville, Pennsylvania on Saturday (Nov. 18).
