No. 3 Men's Lacrosse beats No. 8 Washington & Lee, 15-9 at Mustang Classic

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – RIT sophomore goalie Alex Zborowski made a career-high 19 saves to lead the No. 3 Tigers to a 15-9 win over No. 8 Washington & Lee, in the opening game of the Mustang Classic, Friday.
 
Graduate student attack Jake Erickson tallied two goals and three assists, while graduate student attack Luke Pilcher scored three goals and added an assist. Senior midfielder Kaden Brunson finished with two goals and two assists, while senior midfielder Dylan Bruno and junior attack Ethan Harkins each scored two goals.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Brunson gave RIT the lead on his goal early in the first quarter.
  • Andrew Keller tied the game for Washington & Lee on his goal with 8:11 remaining in the quarter.
  • The Tigers ran off three straight goals, taking a 4-1 lead on senior midfielder Seth Grottenthaler's goal with 1:45 to play in the quarter.
  • Erickson had a goal and three assists for RIT in the opening frame, while sophomore Zbrorwoski made seven saves.
  • Jack Elliott scored early in the second quarter to cut the Tiger's lead to 4-3.
  • Pilcher scored his second of the game with 13:10 to play in the opening half to give RIT a 5-3 lead.
  • Elliott scored back-to-back goals for the Generals, tying the score on his man-up goal with 8:47 remaining in the quarter.
  • Brunson scored his second of the game to give RIT a 6-5 lead, while junior attack Clifford Gaston scored with 4:30 to play to increase RIT's lead to 7-5.
  • Erickson tallied a man-up goal from Grottenthaler inside the final three minutes to give the Tigers an 8-5 halftime lead.
  • Pilcher gave RIT a 9-5 lead on his goal early in the third quarter off an assist from Gaston, while Bruno drove and scored with 5:21 remaining to increase the Tiger's lead to 10-5.
  • Alex Brown cut the deficit to 10-6 on his goal with 3:40 remaining in the quarter, but Harkins tallied a man-up goal with 1:21 remaining to give RIT an 11-6 lead.
  • Senior Connor Finneran scored early in the fourth quarter to give RIT a 12-6 lead.
  • Brown scored for Washington & Lee to cut the RIT lead to 12-7, but Bruno scored his second of the game with 11 minutes to play to give RIT a 13-7 lead.
  • Smith and Brown each scored for the Generals, while Harkins and first-year midfielder David Charney each scored to make it a 15-9 final.

GAME NOTES:

  • Washington & Lee outshot RIT, 49-37.
  • The Tigers went 4-for-4 on man-up and 25-of-30 on clearing attempts.
  • Graduate student face-off specialist Allyn French won 11-of-17 face-offs and had four ground balls.
  • Senior defenseman Michael Grace had a team-high five ground balls.
