No. 3 Men's Lacrosse wins 16-10 at Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. – RIT junior Clifford Gaston scored four goals to lead the No. 3 Tigers to a 16-10 win at Ithaca, Wednesday.
 
Graduate student Luke Pilcher scored three goals and added an assist and senior midfielder Seth Grottenthaler tallied two goals and an assist. Graduate student attack Jake Erickson handed out a pair of assists and senior midfielder Ian Dinga finished with a goal and an assist.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Senior midfielder Michael Finneran scored a driving goal early in the first quarter to give RIT the lead.
  • Ithaca tied the game on a Charlie Niebuhr goal, but back-to-back goals from graduate student midfielder John Mozrall and senior midfielder Dylan Bruno gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead.
  • Ithaca scored two straight goals, tying the game at 3-3 on Niebuhr's goal with six minutes remaining in the quarter.
  • Senior midfielder Kaden Brunson, junior attack Ethan Harkins and Dinga each scored in the closing moments of the quarter to extend RIT's lead to 6-3.
  • RIT outscored Ithaca 6-0 in the second quarter. Gaston scored all three of his first-half goals in the second frame, while Grottenthaler scored twice.
  • Gaston's goal with 2:55 remaining in the half gave RIT a 12-3 lead at the intermission.
  • The Tigers held Ithaca scoreless in the third quarter, while Pilcher scored two goals and Gaston notched his fourth of the game to extend RIT's lead to 15-3 after three quarters.
  • Ithaca ran off six straight goals to start the fourth quarter, cutting the Tiger's lead to 15-9 on Niebuhr's goal with 8:36 remaining.
  • Graduate student attack TJ Hendricks scored before John Sramac scored to make it a 16-10 final.

 
GAME NOTES:

  • RIT's defense held Ithaca scoreless over 40 minutes, including no goals allowed in the second and third quarters.
  • Ithaca outshot RIT, 54-34.
  • RIT sophomore goalie Alex Zborowski made 14 saves in net to improve to 11-1 on the season.
  • The Tigers were 23-of-27 on clears and 1-for-1 on man-up.
  • Sophomore face-off specialist Ethan Spillane won 7-of-16 draws and had six ground balls.

RIT returns to action on Saturday (April 13) against Clarkson at 3:00 p.m. RIT will honor its senior class prior to Saturday's game.
