Wilson named Spencer Penrose Award Finalist for second-straight season

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT Men's Hockey Coach Wayne Wilson was named a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award for the second-consecutive season. Given annually to the Division I Men's Ice Hockey Coach of the Year by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA), Wilson is the only previous winner of the award among this year's nine finalists.

UPDATE (4/3/24) - Wilson was also named the 2024 College Hockey News Coach of the Year.

  • Last month, Wilson was named the Atlantic Hockey Coach of the Year for the second-straight season after leading the Tigers to their second-consecutive Bob DeGregorio Trophy as the league's regular-season champion.
  • RIT went on to sweep five games during the Atlantic Hockey Tournament, including a 5-2 victory over AIC in the championship game, to win the Jack Riley Trophy and an automatic bid to the program's fourth NCAA Tournament appearance.
  • Wilson led the Tigers to a 27-11-2 record for the second-winningest season in program history – one short of the 28-wins compiled in 2009-10.
  • Wilson guided the Tigers to their fourth Atlantic Hockey Championship and first since winning back-to-back titles in 2015 and 2016
  • Wilson won the Penrose Award in 2010 after leading RIT to its first Atlantic Hockey Championship and two victories in the NCAA Tournament for an appearance in the Frozen Four in only the fifth season as a Division I program.
  • He became the 37th coach in NCAA men's hockey history to hit the 450-win plateau during the 3-0 win over Bentley (Jan. 26) earlier this season and also coached his 850th career game last month, becoming only the 42nd NCAA coach to achieve the milestone.
  • Currently 34th in NCAA Men's Ice Hockey history with 461 victories, he is also 10th among active Division I coaches with a 461-314-80 record the last 25 seasons - all on the Tiger bench.
  • Wilson is the only coach in NCAA history to win the Penrose Award and the Edward Jeremiah Award, presented to the NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year, landing the honor in 2001 after guiding the Tigers to a national runner-up finish and a 27-1-1 record.
  • Wilson totaled a 116-31-12 mark in six Division III campaigns (1999-2005) and owns a 345-283-68 record during 19 Division-I seasons.
