Cassaro named Second-Team All-American

ST. PAUL, Minn. – RIT fifth-year defenseman Gianfranco Cassaro was named an CCM/AHCA Men's Hockey Second-Team All-American, announced Friday during the Hobey Baker Award ceremony in conjunction with the NCAA Frozen Four.  

  • Cassaro is the 27th All-American in program history and only the fifth in the Division I era. The first since Will Calverley landed second-team recognition following the 2020-21 campaign, he is also only the second D1-era Tiger defenseman to garner the honor and first since Dan Ringwald in 2009-10.
  • Cassaro's finished the season leading all defensemen in the country with 18 goals while finishing with a career-high 38 points – tied for fourth among all defensemen this season.
  • He also tied for ninth among all skaters with five game-winning goals and tied for 14th with eight power-play goals - the most among defensemen.
  • A two-time Hobey Baker Award nominee, Cassaro was named an Atlantic Hockey First-Team all-star for the second straight season after winning a league-best five Atlantic Hockey Defensive Player of the Week citations this winter.
  • Appearing in all of the Tigers' 117 games over the last three seasons, he scored 35 goals - the most ever by a D1-era RIT defensemen – to go along with 43 assists for 78 points. Paired with 38 appearances and three points (1G/2A) during two seasons at UMass prior to transferring, he finished his collegiate career with 155 games and 81 points.
  • Last season, he finished the regular season first nationally among defensemen in goals, ending the campaign with 14 goals and 32 points to rank sixth among all blueliners nationally.
