Men's Hockey ties Sacred Heart, 3-3
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – RIT sophomore forward Matthew Wilde scored a goal and an assist in a 3-3 Atlantic Hockey America tie at Sacred Heart, Saturday. Following a scoreless overtime, the Pioneers earned the extra AHA point with a 1-0 shootout win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- RIT scored the lone goal of the first period following a Sacred Heart cross checking penalty with under five minutes on the clock. The Tigers cycled the puck around the point before first-year defenseman Mathieu Cobetto-Roy snapped a wrist shot on goal that hit Pioneer goaltender Ajeet Gundarah in the pads. Senior forward Tanner Andrew took a poke at the loose puck, trickling a shot under Gundarah and over the goal line at 16:12.
- Following a scoreless second, Sacred Heart tallied twice in the first 1:52 of the third for a 2-1 lead. Felix Trudeau skated a puck down the slot and dumped a pass to the right faceoff circle where John Jaworkski backahanded a shot past RIT first-year goaltender Jakub Krbecek, far post, 42 seconds into the period.
- Gabe Blanchard then lofted a puck from the neutral zone that deflected off the glass behind the Tiger goal to the right faceoff circle, where Jeremi Tremblay snapped a shot over Krbeck, far post.
- The Tigers retied the game less than five minutes later. Sophomore forward Tyler Fukakusa threw a pass across the top of the Sacred Heart zone to graduate student defenseman Dimitri Mikrogiannakis, who one-timed a shot on goal from the top of the left faceoff circle. The shot rebounded off Gundarah's pads outside the right post where Wilde cleaned up the rebound at 6:41.
- Sacred Heart re-took the lead at 10:51 with a power play goal following a Tiger holding penalty. Marcus Joughin took a long shot from the point that Max Dorrington redirected in front of the crease past Krbecek.
- RIT tied the game with 3:58 left in regulation. Wilde intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and backhanded a short pass to senior forward Grady Hobbs, who threw a puck around the boards behind the Pioneer goal. Fukakusa collected the puck outside the left faceoff circle and threw a pass on goal that Hobbes deflected over Gundarah.
