Baseball splits regular season finale with Rochester; wins 12-9, loses 6-5
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT baseball team split a doubleheader with Rochester; winning 12-9, losing 6-5, Saturday.
GAME ONE – RIT 12, Rochester 9
Junior Sam Kulp and junior Adam Marsh both hit home runs, earning a combined 7 RBI as the Tigers defeated Rochester in game one of a Sunday doubleheader.
- Rochester took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double and a sacrifice fly
- In the third inning, junior Adam Marsh tied the game with a two-run homer over the center field wall
- The Yellow Jackets took back their early lead on a fielder's choice in the third
- RIT scored four runs in the fourth, taking a 6-3 lead on an RBI single from graduate student Gil Merod and a three-run homer from Kulp
- In the bottom of fourth, Rochester got within one run on two sacrifice flies
- The Yellow Jackets tied the game 6-6 in the sixth inning on an RBI single down the left field line
- In the seventh, senior Kyle Poorman tripled to right center and scored sophomore Jarin Moses. The next batter Charlie Slaymaker, hit an RBI single to center and scored Poorman making it 8-6 in favor of the Tigers
- Rochester hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, tying the game 8-8
- In the eighth, the Yellow Jackets took a 9-8 lead on an RBI single
- Slaymaker was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the ninth, senior John Bagley hit a sacrifice fly to center and Kulp had an RBI single that scored two base runners, putting RIT ahead 12-9
- Rochester's first batter of the ninth reached first on a single, but the Tigers were able to record outs for the next three batters
GAME TWO – Rochester 6, RIT 5
Sophomore Roberto Reade finished 2-for-4, including a three-run homer and a team-high 3 RBI as RIT falls to Rochester in the ninth inning of Sunday's game two of a doubleheader.
- Rochester got on the board first with a two-run shot over the center field wall, taking 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first
- The Yellow Jackets hit another home run in the third, increasing their lead to three runs
- Sophomore Charlie Slaymaker reached on a throwing error in the sixth, scoring junior Adam Marsh
- In the seventh, Marsh singled to right field and scored junior Sam Kulp, putting the Tigers within one
- Rochester took a 4-2 lead in the seventh on an RBI single
- Reade hit a three-run homer in the eighth, making it 5-4 and giving RIT their first lead of the game
- The Yellow Jackets tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double down the left field line
- In the ninth, Marsh reached on a single with one out. The next batter, sophomore Jarin Moses was hit by a pitch, putting two men on base for the Tigers. Sophomore Trent Rapp then grounded out into a double play
- Rochester was able to load the bases on two walks, one being intentional, and player being hit by a pitch. The Yellow Jackets then hit an RBI single, earning a walk-off victory over the Tigers
WHAT'S NEXT
The Tigers clinched the third-seed in the Liberty League West Division and will travel to the East's No. 2 seed Union for the Crossover Divisional Series, Saturday (May 4). Game times TBA.
