No. 2 Men's Lacrosse beats No. 9 Union, 16-12

ROCHESTER, NY – RIT graduate student Luke Pilcher tallied four goals and six points to lead the No. 2 Tigers to a 16-12 win over Union, Friday. Pilcher moves into a tie for fourth on RIT's all-time scoring list, tying RIT Athletics Hall of Famer Bill Bjorness with 266 career points.

RIT clinches a share of the Liberty League regular season title and earned the top seed in next week's tournament.
 
Graduate student attack Jake Erickson tallied four goals and five points, while junior attack Clifford Gaston and graduate student midfielder John Mozrall each scored two goals and had two assists.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Union's Peter Kip scored 1:55 into the game to give the Garnett Chargers the lead.
  • Gaston tied the game on his goal and Pilcher scored off an assist from Gaston with 8:29 to play in the quarter to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
  • Union ran off three straight goals, taking a 5-3 lead on Zach Davis's goal with 20 seconds to play in the quarter.
  • Erickson scored three goals in a 3:09 span to begin the second quarter, giving the Tigers a 6-5 lead on his man-up goal with 9:13 to play in the half.
  • Davis tied the game at 6-6 on his goal with 8:10 to play and senior midfielder Caiden Perry scored off an assist from senior defenseman Michael Grace with 7:26 to play to give RIT a 7-6 halftime lead.
  • Senior midfielder Seth Grottenthaler scored 1:57 into the third quarter to extend RIT's lead to 8-6.
  • Kip scored to make it 8-7 before senior midfielder Dylan Bruno and Pilcher scored two straight goals to give RIT a 10-7 lead.
  • Davis and Emmett Lyne tallied consecutive goals, cutting the Tiger's lead to 10-9 on Davis's goal with 8:30 remaining in the third.
  • Gaston gave the Tigers an 11-9 lead on his goal late in the third.
  • Jake Mabardy made it a one-goal game on his tally early in the fourth quarter.
  • Mozrall scored the first of his two fourth-quarter goals with 10:27 to play to give RIT a 12-10 lead.
  • After a Kip goal cut the Tigers' lead to 12-11, Erickson and Mozrall netted back-to-back goals to give RIT a 14-11 lead.
  • Michael Shaw scored with 5:56 to play to cut the deficit to 14-12, but senior long-stick midfielder Caleb Commandant and Pilcher scored late in regulation to make it a 16-12 final.

 
GAME NOTES:

  • RIT clinches a share of its 15th straight Liberty League regular season title.
  • Sophomore goalie Alex Zborowski made 17 saves in net to improve to 15-1.
  • RIT was 24-of-29 on clears and went 1-for-3 on man-up.
  • Grace had an assist, three ground balls and caused three turnovers.
