Peshenko and Gonsalves named RIT Athletes of the Week

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - RIT junior Anna Peshenko (WS&D) and graduate student Elijah Gonsalves (MHKY) were named RIT Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.

Peshenko earned All-American Honorable Mention honors in the 200 breaststroke final at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships this past week. She placed 15th, clocking a time of 2:19.75.

Gonsalves totaled two goals and two assists to lead RIT to a 5-2 win over AIC in Saturday's Atlantic Hockey Championship. Gonsalves was named the Atlantic Hockey Tournament MVP after leading all players with 10 points on four goals and six assists the last three weekends.

March 19 Jessica Majot (SB) Alex Zborowski (MLAX)

Majot recorded a 2-0 record with a 0.39 ERA in Florida, last week. She allowed no runs on one hit and struck out three in a 9-0 win over St. Joseph's, Tuesday, and allowed two runs on four hits and struck out six in Friday's 10-2 win over Westfield State.

Zborowski recorded a 2-0 record, a 10.00 goals against average and a .608 save percentage in two games at the Mustang Classic last weekend. The sophomore goalie made a career-high 19 saves, including seven in the first and fourth quarters, in No. 3 RIT's 15-9 win over No. 8 Washington & Lee, Friday. Zborowski made 12 saves in Saturday's 16-11 win over No. 2 Tufts to improve to 7-0 on the season.

March 12 Serafina Kiselgof (WLAX) Tyler Fukakusa (MHKY)

Kiselgof tallied 15 points on 10 goals and five assists in three games last week. The sophomore attack tallied three goals and two assists in RIT's 15-13 win over Brockport, Wednesday. Saturday, she scored a career-high five goals and recorded a career-best six points to lead RIT to a 19-9 win over Bridgewater State in Puerto Rico, and scored two goals and an assist in Sunday's 20-2 win over Chatham.

Fukakusa led the Tigers with six points during their Atlantic Hockey Quarterfinal sweep of Robert Morris. He notched a pair of goals and an assist while winning 12-of-21 faceoffs in Friday's 7-0 opening win before scoring what proved to be the game-winning goal and adding two assists along with 8-of-12 faceoff wins and a pair of blocked shots in Saturday's 5-1 victory. Fukakusa had three shots on goal during the series - all resulted in goals - while winning 20-of-33 (.606) total faceoffs to help top-seeded RIT advance to their third-straight AHA semifinal appearance.

March 5 Maddi Williams (WS&D) Mike Glynn III (WRES)

Williams earned third place in the 1-meter and 3-meter boards at the NCAA Division III Diving Regionals this past weekend. She scored a 433.15 in the 3-meter competition, while finishing with a score of 440.70 in the 1-meter competition to earn a bid into the NCAA Division III Championships.

Glynn finished second at 149-lb. at the NCAA Mideast Regional last weekend to qualify for the NCAA Championships for the first time in his career. Glynn, the No. 3 seed, defeated Mahmoud Esa with a fall at 2:48 in his opening bout, Friday. He beat Shane Strausser with an 11-0 major decision in the second round and took down Dominick Vinci with a 19-3 technical fall in the quarterfinals. Saturday, Glynn defeated No. 2 Matthew Beyer with an 11-10 overtime win. Glynn took down Beyer in the closing seconds of the third period to tie the match and was awarded the winning point in overtime.

Feb. 27 Anna Peshenko (WS&D) Drew Scheib (MS&D)

Peshenko won three individual titles to help RIT to a second place finish at the Liberty League Championship. The junior swimmer won her third straight Liberty League titles in the 400 IM in a time of 4:29.93, the 100 Breaststroke (1:05.12) and 200 Breaststroke (2:18.70).

Scheib won two individual titles and placed second in another to help lead RIT to its third straight Liberty League title. Scheib won the title in the 200 Butterfly in a Liberty League record time of 1:47.82 and the 100 Butterfly (48.36). Scheib placed second in the 200 IM, posting a program-record time of 1:50.09 in the finals.

Feb. 20 Emma Waite (WBB) Josiah Turner (MBB)

Turner averaged 11.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and shot 50.0 percent from the floor in two games for RIT last week. He scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season in a loss to Union, Friday. Turner tallied nine points and grabbed seven rebounds in RIT's 91-78 win over Bard, Saturday to help the Tigers secure a spot in the Liberty League Tournament for the first time since 2017-18.

Waite averaged 28.0 points, 3.5 assists and 11.0 rebounds in two games last weekend. Waite scored a program-record 40 points in RIT's 77-34 win over Bard, Saturday. She broke the old record of 37 points set by Jessica Glaz in 2018 with a three-pointer with 2:11 remaining in the fourth quarter. Waite scored 16 points and had nine rebounds in a loss to Union, Friday.

Feb. 13 Kira Kronenberg (WTEN) Brock Bowen (MBB)

Kronenberg went 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles to lead RIT to a 1-1 record last week, losing one game each in singles and doubles. She defeated Oneonta's Julia Holtermann, 6-0, 6-0 at first singles in Saturday's 7-2 win over the Red Dragons. She teamed up with junior Gabby Donohue for an 8-0 win at second doubles in Saturday's win. Sunday, Kronenberg took down Rochester's Josephine Libby, 6-1, 6-0 at first singles and she and classmate Maya Clinard were 8-1 winners at first doubles.

Bowen averaged 15.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists in three games for RIT last week. The junior guard shot 55.6 percent from the floor and 52.4 percent from beyond the arc to lead the Tigers to a 2-1 record. Bowen scored 12 points on 4-of-7 from three-point range in the Tigers 84-83 win at Ithaca, Tuesday. He scored 14 points and grabbed four rebounds in RIT's 63-61 loss at Vassar and a tallied game-high 19 points, hitting 5-of-9 from beyond the arc in the Tiger's 71-66 win at Skidmore, Saturday.

Feb. 6 Ansley Orrell (WBB) Mike Atanasoff (MSD)
Orrell averaged 15.0 points in a pair of Liberty League games last weekend, shooting 10-of-24 from the floor, including eight three pointers. Orrell scored 11 points off the bench in Friday's loss against St. Lawrence and scored a game-high 19 points, including a season-high with five three pointers, in Saturday's win over Clarkson.

Atanasoff won two individual events and was on two winning relays to help lead RIT to a win at Hobart, Saturday. The senior swimmer won the 50 freestyle (21.48) and the 50 butterfly (22.73), and swam the third leg in the winning 200 medley relay team (1:37.58) and swam the opening leg in the victorious 200 free relay team (1:27.13).

Jan. 30 Sadie Rose (WT&F) Tommy Scarfone (MHKY)

Rose placed first in the 200, 300 and was a member of the winning 1,600 relay team this past weekend at RIT's first Friday meet of the indoor season. Rose set program record times in the 200 (25.27) and the 300 (40.78), qualifying for the Atlantic Region Championship in the 200. She now has the top-two times in those events in RIT program history. She also ran the last leg for the winning RIT team in the 1,600 relay (4:17.29). 

Scarfone combined to stop 44 of 45 shots during the Tigers' weekend sweep of Bentley, only allowing one power-play. He registered a 19-save shutout in Friday's 3-0 win to become the winningest D1-era goaltender in Tiger history while logging his eighth-career shutout (most among active AHA goalies). He then stopped 25 shots to backstop Saturday's 2-1 OT comeback win to improve to 15-7-1 this winter.

Jan. 23 Gwen Petrie (WSD) Carter Wilkie (MHKY)

Petrie won both the diving events last weekend in RIT's victory over Rochester. She won the 1-meter dive with a score of 249.64 and the 3-meter dive with a score of 279.44, qualifying for the NCAA Diving Regionals. RIT beat Rochester by a score of 175-124.

Wilkie totaled a conference-high seven points during the Tigers' two-game sweep at Robert Morris last weekend. He started with two goals and an assist in Friday's 6-3 win before tying a career-high with four points on a goal and three assists while winning 14-of-20 faceoffs in Saturday's 7-1 victory.

Jan. 16 Addie Alvarez (WHKY) Bryson Vaughn (WRE)
Alvarez scored the game-winning goal 2:11 into overtime to lead RIT to a 3-2 win over Penn State, Saturday. Alvarez broke in 1-v-1 on Penn State goalie, Josie Bothun, scoring on a wrist-shot into the top corner for her sixth goal of the season.

Vaughn won the 141 lb. weight class to help the Tigers to a second-place finish at the Will Abele Invitational, last Saturday. After a bye, top-seeded Vaughn defeated Andrew Minko with a 16-1 technical fall. He defeated Aaron Morocho with an 11-0 major decision in the quarter finals and defeated Josh Post 5-0 in the semifinals. Vaughn defeated Isaiah Shafer, 5-3 in the title match.

Jan. 9 Kaitlyn Bockelman (WBB) Brock Bowen (MBB)
Bockelman scored a career-high 24 points, helping RIT defeat RPI, 69-65, Saturday. The Tigers were trailing for a majority of the game, but Bockelman's 14 fourth-quarter points helped RIT secure a come-from-behind victory. She was 10-for-13 (76.9%) from the floor and 4-for-6 (66.6%) from the free throw line. Bockelman also notched four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Bowen averaged 18.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and shot 52.2 percent from the floor to help lead RIT to a pair of Liberty League wins last weekend. The junior guard scored 17 (5-of-10 shooting), grabbed six rebounds and had five assists in the Tiger's 77-76 win over Hobart, Friday. Bowen scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds in RIT's 59-57 overtime win against RPI, Saturday.

Dec. 5 Hannah Durand (WBB) Drew Scheib (MSD)
Durand scored 24 points in RIT's win against Bard, Friday. The junior guard shot 9-for-13 (69.2%) from the floor, including 5-for-7 (71.4%) from behind the arc. Durand tallied 20 points the following day against Union, shooting 7-of-10 (70%) from the floor including 4-for-6 (66.6%) from behind the arc. She averaged 22.0 points, shooting 69.5% (16-of-23 ) from the floor and 9-of-13 (69.2%) from beyond the arc.

Scheib broke five individual pool records and was part of a record-setting relay at the Don Richards Invitational last weekend to earn his second athlete-of-the-week honor this season. Scheib set Judson Pool records in the 100 (48.93) and 200 (1:50.33) butterfly and the 200 IM (1:52.20). The senior swimmer set the pool record in the 100 backstroke in the opening leg of Friday's 400 medley relay and the pool record in the 100 freestyle in the opening leg of Saturday's 400 freestyle relay. Scheib was part of the 200 medley relay team that set a pool record (1:31.13).

Nov. 28 Faye Kaplinski (WBB) Matt Caggiano (MBB)
Kaplinski tallied a game-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting to lead the Tigers to a 67-53 win at Brockport, Tuesday. Kaplinski shot 4-for-6 from the free throw and grabbed four rebounds in 19 minutes of action.

Caggiano scored 15 points in the Tigers 66-56 win over Alfred State, Tuesday. He shot 5-of-9 from the floor, 5-of-6 from the foul line to go along with five rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Nov. 21 Anna Peshenko (WSD) Lee Rubin (WRE)
Peshenko won three individual events and swam a leg in a winning relay against Ithaca, Saturday. She won the 100 breaststroke (1:05.63), 200 breaststroke (2:22.47) and the 200 IM (2:10.61). She swam the second leg in the winning 200 medley relay (1:47.51).

Rubin won the 125 lb weight class at the 2023 SUNYAC Championships, Saturday. After a bye, Rubin, the No. 2 seed, defeated No. 7 Billy Colloca (Oneonta) with a fall at 2:02 in his first match. He beat No. 3 Christian Lievano (Cortland) in the semifinals and defeated No. 4 Daniel Parkulom (St. John Fisher), 13-7 in the finals.

Nov. 14 Amelia Gilbert (WXC) Derick Koen (MXC)
Gilbert finished 16th out of 145 runners at the NCAA Niagara Regionals on Saturday, helping RIT place third out of 20 teams. Gilbert was the second Liberty League runner to cross the finish line and based on her performance, was invited to participate in the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships this coming weekend.

Koen finished 11th out of 176 runners at NCAA Niagara Regionals on Saturday, leading RIT to a sixth place finish out of 25 teams. Koen was the first Liberty League runner to cross the finish line. Based on his performance, Koen received an at-large invite to the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championships.

Nov. 7 Emma Roland (WHKY) Mike Atanasoff (MSD)
Atanasoff won two individual events and swam legs in two winning relays to help RIT to a 176-124 win over Gannon, Saturday. The senior swimmer won the 50 freestyle in a pool-record time of 20.73 and 100 butterfly with a pool-record time of 49.05. Atanasoff swam the third leg in the winning 200 medley relay and the anchor leg in the 200 freestyle relay.

Roland scored two goals, including the game-winner in OT to lead RIT to a 3-2 win over Mercyhurst, Saturday. She tied the game at 1-1 on her goal at 11:39 of the first period, and tallied the game-winner :52 into overtime off an assist from senior Mia Tsilemos.

Oct. 31 Amber Flynn (WSOC) Drew Scheib (MSD)
Flynn played 180 minutes, anchoring a Tigers defense that allowed four shots on target and no goals in a pair of 0-0 draws at Ithaca and Vassar to help RIT secure a second-place finish in the final Liberty League standings.

Scheib won two individual events to lead RIT to wins over St. Lawrence and Monroe Community College, Friday. The senior swimmer won the 100 backstroke (52.43) and the 200 IM (1:59.05).

Oct. 24 Madisen Pavoris (WSD) Mike Atanasoff (MSD)
Pavoris won and individual event to help lead RIT to a 225-56 win at Alfred, Saturday. The first-year swimmer won the 200 backstroke in a pool-record time of 2:10.75.

Atanasoff won two individual events and was part of two winning relays to help lead No. 17 RIT to a 227-73 win at Alfred, Saturday. Atanasoff won the 50 freestyle (21.57) and 100 freestyle (48.36). He swam the anchor leg in the 200 medley relay that set a pool record (1:39.07) and was part of the winning 200 freestyle relay.

Oct. 17 Pickering (WHKY) Tommy Scarfone (MHKY)
Pickering tied the game with her first collegiate goal 36 seconds into the second period and also added an assist in Friday's win before blocking three shots on Saturday.

Scarfone made 36 saves in Saturday's 3-0 shutout of Notre Dame during RIT's annual Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend game in front of a sellout crowd of 10,556 at Blue Cross Arena. He backstopped the Tigers' defense that killed all six Irish power play attempts, including a full 5-on-3 six minutes into the game as well as a five-minute major at the end of the second period. Scarfone logged his sixth career shutout and 23rd career game with at least 30 saves en route to his fifth AHA weekly honor.
 
Oct. 10 Jessie Gomez (WSOC) Men's Varsity 8
Gomez recorded two goals and an assist to help lead RIT to a 1-0-1 record last week, firing six shots, including three on target. Gomez scored in the second minute in the Tigers' 1-1 tie at Nazareth, Tuesday. She scored a goal and added an assist in RIT's 2-0 win over St. Lawrence, Saturday. She scored in the 14th minute to give RIT the lead, and assisted on Olivia Harris' goal in the 19th minute to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

The men's Varsity 8+ boat comprised of coxswain, Jacob Marrer, Nic Langdon, Parker Kinsman, Sam Ferreira, Tommy Moore, Ben Baker, Jack Oden, Adrian Edwards and Adam Dernis finished first in the Men's Collegiate 1V 8+ race at the Head of the Genesee, Saturday. The Tigers took first with a time of 16:41.825, beating Clarkson, Union and Rochester.

Oct. 3 Junior Sydney Neff (WVB) and Derick Koen (MXC)
Neff pushed the Tigers to a 2-0 week, including a three-set sweep at Bard in their Liberty League opener. She totaled a three-set season-high 30 assists to go along with 11 digs and five services aces while directing the offense to a .299 attack percentage versus Bard before adding 27 assists and 10 digs in a 3-0 win over SUNY Poly.

Koen landed his second RIT Athlete of the Week accoldae after finishing first out of 376 runners (25:36.5) to lead the men's cross country team to fourth place out of 34 teams Saturday at the Paul Short Run in the Men's College White 8K.

Sept. 26 Elena Onodera (WSOC) Grahith Movva (MTEN)
Onodera tallied an assist in 168 minutes of action to help RIT to a 1-0-1 record, last week. The sophomore forward recorded an assist and had two shots in 78 minutes in Wednesday's 1-1 draw against No. 1 William Smith. She played 90 minutes, firing three shots and earned the corner kick that led to RIT's game-winning goal in Saturday's 1-0 win at No. 22 Clarkson.

Movva picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Daemen's Alex Lumanog at first singles in RIT's 5-4 win, Wednesday. Movva came back from a 2-4 first-set deficit to win 6-4, winning the second set, 6-2. Movva and first-year Anthony Lounder came back from a 3-5 deficit to beat Luis de Vuyst and Zachary LaPlante, 8-5 win at third doubles.
 
Sept. 18 Kira Kronenberg (WTEN) Derick Koen (MXC)
Kronenberg recorded a 2-1 record at the St. Lawrence Fall Invitational, last weekend. The first-year defeated St. Lawrence's Molly Jespersen, 8-2 in her opening match, Saturday. She lost her second match 8-7 (7-4) to Angelica Aksdal-Jansen, but came back to defeat Geneseo's Natalie Pipes, 8-0 on Sunday. She teamed up with first-year Maya Clinard to record a 2-1 record in doubles.

Koen was the top Division III runner at the Yellowjacket Invitational, Saturday. The sophomore runner finished 14th out of 250 runners, completing the eight-kilometer course in 25:54.7.

Sept. 11 Olivia Harris (WSOC) Joshua Price (MSOC)
Harris tallied a goal and an assist to help lead RIT to a 2-0 record, last week. The junior midfielder had an assist on Elena Onodera's goal in RIT's 1-0 win over Wheaton (Ill.), Friday. She scored the Tigers' first goal in the 21st minute in RIT's 2-0 win over Penn State-Behrend, Saturday. 

Price scored three goals on six shots to help lead RIT to a 2-0 record, last week. The senior forward tallied a career-high two goals in the Tigers 4-0 win over Keuka, Tuesday. He scored in the fifth minute to give the Tigers the lead and again in the tenth minute to make 2-0, Tigers. Price scored in the 80th minute in Friday's 3-1 win over Geneseo, intercepting a pass in the Knight's defense zone, and scoring in the corner.

Sept. 5 Katie Cobos (WXC) Randy Dickersbach (MSOC)
Cobos finished first out of 57 runners to lead RIT to first place at the Fifth-Annual St. John Fisher Terry Rodenbeck Invitational, Friday. Cobos finished the four-kilometer course in 14:53.1, outkicking a tight pack at the end to win by less than two seconds.

Dickersbach scored a goal in the Tigers' 1-1 draw at Brockport, Friday. The senior forward scored in the 52nd minute off a corner kick to give the Tigers the lead, finishing with two shots on target.
