Women's Volleyball defeats Carlow, 3-1; falls to Westminster, 3-2
LATROBE, Pa. – The RIT Women's Volleyball team split two matches on the second day of the Saint Vincent Bearcat Challenge, Saturday. The Tigers defeated Carlow, 3-1 (25-18, 18-25, 25-20, 25-12) before falling to Westminster in five, 3-2 (25-18, 17-25, 31-29, 23-25, 15-9).
RIT 3, CARLOW 1 (25-18, 18-25, 25-20, 25-12)
- Junior Macie Jolliffe logged a match-high 17 kills on .536 hitting while first-year Anna Wasula totaled 15 kills and nine digs.
- Junior Sara Wild added 34 assists and served four aces while junior Jada Lee logged a career-high 16 digs.
- RIT opened a 12-6 first-set lead and later pulled ahead by eight, 20-12. Carlow scored three-straight points to pull back within five, but the Tigers finished the match on a 5-3 run, including a pair of kills by Wasula, to take the opener.
- Carlow opened the second with an 8-6 lead before scoring a 9-0 run for a 17-6 lead that proved insurmountable.
- Tied, 14-14, in the third, Carlow took an 18-14 lead with four straight points, before RIT responded with a 6-1 run for a 20-19 lead. Carlow retied the score, 20-20, but the Tigers notched five unanswered points, including a pair of service aces by first-year Allison Walton, to clinch the set.
- RIT rode a .429 attack percentage, only committing three hitting errors, to victory in the fourth. The Tigers broke an early 4-4 tie with a 7-0 run before scoring before scoring seven of the next 11 points for a 17-8 lead. Leading, 17-9, RIT finished the match on an 8-3 run to seal the win.
WESTMINSTER 3, RIT 2 (25-18, 17-25, 31-29, 23-25, 15-9)
- Wild totaled a career-high 44 assists while Jolliffe and Wasula added 12 and 11 kills apiece, respectively.
- First-year Sofia Leon logged career-highs of 16 kills and 23 digs while twin sister Isabel Leon added eight kills, 10 digs and three service aces.
- First-year Isabelle Swain chipped in a career-high 19 digs while Lee totaled 10 digs and 3 service aces.
- RIT held a slim 14-13 lead in the first, but Westminster put together a 9-1 surge for a 22-15 lead that proved decisive.
- RIT hit .542 in the second, only committing one attack error. RIT used a 7-1 run to build a 13-6 lead before leading by as many as 11 (22-11) down the stretch en route to tying the match.
- RIT led 11-5 to start the third, but Westminster battled back to even the score, 16-16. The Tigers opened what proved to be its last multiple-point lead, 19-17, before Westminster came back to tie the score, 19-19. RIT later fought off three-set points, before having a chance of its own at 27-26. Westminster scored back-to-back points for another shot at the set, 28-27, but RIT responded with two points for a 29-28 lead. Westminster then notched three-straight kills to earn the win.
- Tied, 6-6, in the fourth, RIT moved out to a 12-9 lead before Westminster notched two-straight points to pull back within one. The Tigers then rode a 9-2 surge to a 21-13 lead before Westminster put together a 10-3 run to pull back within one, 24-23. A kill by Wasula sealed the RIT win to force a deciding fifth.
- Westminster opened a 9-4 lead in the final set and later led 13-6 on its way to the victory.

RIT will play a tri-match hosted by Mt. Aloysius (2:00 p.m. along with Waynesburg (12:00 p.m.) next Saturday (Sept. 6).
