Softball loses 14-6 and ties Houghton 10-10 in non-conference double-header

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT softball team lost game one and tied game two against Houghton, Monday. The Tigers dropped game one 14-6 in five innings and tied 10-10 in game two after the game was called because of darkness after five innings.
 
GAME ONE (Houghton 14, RIT 6 – 5 inn.)

  • Junior Erin Ozminkowski went 2-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored, while first years Maria Minemier and Kathryn Baretela each drove in a pair of runs.
  • RIT scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, started by a single from Ozminkowski.
  • Minemier singled, driving in Ozminkowski and Cook to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
  • Houghton scored four times in the top of the third. Danielle Nelson, Carlee Miller, Jennifer Page and Keri Wisneski all scored to give the Highlanders a 4-3 lead.
  • Baretela hit her first collegiate home run, a three-run blast, in the bottom of the third to give RIT a 6-4 lead.
  • Houghton scored three runs in the top of the fourth and seven more in the top half of the fifth. Nelson hit a double to right-center, driving in three runs in the top of the fifth to make it a 14-6 final.
  • Sophomore Jessica Majot took the loss on the mound, allowing four runs on two hits and two strike outs.

 
GAME TWO (RIT 10, Houghton 10 – 5 inn.)

  • Ozminkowski and Baretela each went 3-for-3 in game two. Ozminkowski had three RBI, while Baretela had two RBI. Sophomore Bella Pioggia and senior Elise Guth each had two hits.
  • Ozminkowski doubled in junior Lillian Rienstra in the bottom of the first to give RIT a 1-0 lead.
  • Houghton scored four times in the top of the second. Nelson drove in three on her single, while Miller doubled to left, driving in Nelson from second.
  • RIT answered with three runs in the bottom of the second. Pioggia doubled, driving in Baretela, while Guth singled, to drive in first-year Erin Merkley and Pioggia to tie the score at 4-4.
  • Baretela tripled in the bottom of the third, plating Ozminkowski, while junior Bailey Kehl hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Baretela to give the Tigers a 6-4 lead.
  • Miller homered in the top of the fourth, while Chyanne Bushyhead drove in Trinity Copeland and Page to give the Highlanders a 7-6 lead.
  • Ozminkowski drove in Cook and Guth in the bottom of the fourth on her double. She scored on a passed ball, while Baretela singled to drive in Majot to give RIT a 10-7 lead.
  • Miller doubled to left-center in the top of the fifth, driving in Nelson, Peterson and Crandall to tie the game at 10-10.
  • First-year Katie Schneider went five innings allowing 10 runs on eight hits. She struck out six and walked six.
