Baseball takes two from Hobart; 6-3, 7-6

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT baseball team won both games of a Liberty League doubleheader against Hobart; 6-3 and 7-6, Monday.

GAME ONE – RIT 6, Hobart 3 (7 inn.)
Junior center fielder Sam Kulp and sophomore third baseman Charlie Slaymaker earn 2 RBI each as the Tigers beat Hobart, 6-3 in game one.

  • The Statesmen score on an RBI single in the first and take an early 1-0 lead
  • An RBI single to left center from sophomore second basemen Jarin Moses and an RBI double from Slaymaker, gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead in the third
  • In the fourth, Kulp grounded out to second, scoring first-year right fielder Mikey Zacher. Shortly after, Moses reached first on a throwing error by Hobart's third basemen and graduate student left fielder Zach Mecca scored, putting RIT in front 5-1
  • Kulp earned his second RBI of the day on a single that scored Mecca, increasing the Tigers' lead to five
  • Hobart scored two more runs in the sixth after one batter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, followed by an RBI single, putting the Statesmen within three
  • Sophomore relief pitcher Luc Rising allowed only one hit in the seventh, earning the save for the Tigers

GAME TWO
First-year first baseman Ben Fitzgerald goes 2-for-4 with a team-high 2 RBI as the Tigers rally to defeat Hobart 7-6 in game two.

  • Sophomore second baseman Jarin Moses hit a double to left center that scored junior shortstop Randy Dodig. The next batter, sophomore designated hitter Trent Rapp singled to right center and scored Moses, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the first inning
  • Hobart took a 3-2 lead in the first on an 2 RBI double and a ground out to second that scored the runner on third
  • In the fourth, junior center fielder Sam Kulp singled to left center and scored first-year right fielder Mikey Zacher, tying the game at three
  • After six scoreless innings from the combined efforts of senior starting pitcher John Arnold and graduate student relief pitcher Matthew Chase, the Statesmen scored three runs and took a 6-3 lead
  • In the eighth, sophomore third baseman Charlie Slaymaker singled to center field and Moses scored. The next at-bat, senior catcher Kyle Poorman hit an RBI single that advanced Slaymaker to third. A single from Fitzgerald scored both Slaymaker and Poorman, giving the Tigers a 7-6 lead
  • Chase completes the game and shuts out the Statesmen in the final two innings, earning the win for the Tigers
